Psalm 119

Have you ever studied Psalm 119?
I have counseled from it numerous times as a nouthetic counselor -
it is a spring of truth about conforming to God's Word

I know my own heart, bent toward wandering distractions, needs to
be so diligent in pursuing God and seeking Him in His Word -
For that is where He is found.
That is where He reveals His will for my life.  For your life.

This psalm is long.
The longest of all the psalms
and it is uniquely structured. . .

22 sections each corresponding to the 22 letters of the hebrew alphabet
Each section with eight lines beginning with the corresponding letter.
{Of course, we lose that beauty of its construction in our english translation}

Psalm 119 is an acrostic in praise of the Holy Scriptures.
Scripture magnifying scripture.

Jewish students no doubt memorized the alphabet while memorizing
amazing doctrine truth about the Bible.  The Divine Law.
Oh how our own culture and time has lost this reverence and proper doctrine
regarding the scriptures.

Ten different words are used by the psalmist to refer to the Divine Law.
Just reading through these stirs in me a great awe for His Word!
And the right place it should have in my life, in my home, in my parenting, in my marriage...

GOD'S LAW
enacted by Him as our Sovereign; that which points the way

HIS WAY
the rule of His providence

HIS TESTIMONIES
solemnly declared to the world; those things to which God witnesses

HIS COMMANDMENTS
given with authority; that which God requires of man

HIS PRECEPTS
not left as indifferent matters to us but mandates to be observed and practiced

HIS WORD
a declaration of His mind

HIS JUDGEMENTS
framed in infinite wisdom; legal decisions handed down

HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS
the rule and standard for what is right

HIS STATUTES
always binding; engraved or cut for eternity and dependable for all generations;
a difinitive standard

HIS TRUTH
eternal; enduring forever

Vs. 4 makes it so very clear -
God's favor and blessing is found in obeying and keeping His commands.
Obedience as works does not bring about our own righteousness or salvation,
but walking in HIS way (Hebrew tam) brings about a lifestyle in conformity to Him

The command is to have our tam or way as fixed as the commandments of God.

His divine power has given us everything we need (everything)
for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him
who called us by His own glory and goodness.
{2 Peter 1:3}

All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for
teaching
for reproof
for correction
for training in righteousness
that the man of God may be adequate
equipped for every good work!
{2 Timothy 3:16-17}

What place does the Word of God have in your life?
What is God working in your life through His Word right now?

Whatever your circumstances.
Whatever your stage of life.
Whatever your journey. . .
be encouraged. . .
His Word is sufficient for YOU!
