The big anticipated project in the fourth grade at our school is the Arizona Project. For several months, each student completes a workbook about the state of Arizona and plans for an exhibit piece on a landmark in our beloved state. You might remember Peter's project - the Roosevelt Damn.......
Charlotte selected Arizona's painted desert. It covers 93,500 acres and stretches over 160 miles. It is a long expanse of badland hills and barren buttes of rainbow colors. Colorful sediments of bentonite clay and sandstone, stacked in elegant layers, much like a layer cake, feed off the Arizona sun sets in an ever changing display of colorful splendor.
First, Charlotte built the buttes and hills with foamy clay and let it dry for 2 weeks. She added a few tips of some of my ferns for effect.
Next, we (and I do mean WE.....this is the second Arizona project I can proudly put on my parental resume! Im not sure where Ian disappears to when these things come due!!) mixed a variety of colored sands so we had a nice variety to work with. Love Hobby Lobby!

It was a nice day to work outside...
and we're so glad we did our work outside....look at this mess!
Charlotte was very proud (as was I) of the finished product! Her goal: a blue ribbon! All the projects will go on display for the all school open house May 3rd.
